Red squad
In the United States, Red Squads were police intelligence units that specialize in infiltrating, conducting counter-measures and gathering intelligence on political and social groups during the twentieth century. Dating as far back as the Haymarket Riot in 1886, Red Squads became common in larger cities such as Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles during the First Red Scare of the 1920s. They were set up as specialized units of city police departments, as a weapon against labor unions, communists, anarchists, and other dissidents.

He became "Meurant, the gunrunner" in the public's mind after media learned that, while he was the MP for Hobson, he was brokering a deal to sell surplus New Zealand Army rifles overseas. Of that affair, he says he had connections, was trying to help and there was to be no fee for him.
Later Meurant, who speaks Russian, was a director of a Russian-owned, Vanuatu-registered bank called Prok. Because there was a view in international media that the Russian mafia was behind emerging eastern banks, a legend developed that Meurant was close with the Russian mafia.

Not sure if any of you have heard about an Australian company called firepower which was run by a man named Tim Johnston. He basically started a company selling a miracle fuel pill that never actually worked while he collected millions of dollars, bought properties in many countries, antiques, paintings and jet setted around the world with his family. Investors have lost plenty of money and in some cases their life savings. Investor losses are estimated to be 100 million. He is currently banned from leaving Australia as investigations are under way.
His 2 daughters have been called the Hilton sisters of Perth (but better looking!) which prompted a negative comment from Paris Hilton herself.
A book has already been published titled "The most spectacular fraud in Australian history".
He was born into a Catholic family but he and his wife are currently JW's (not sure about the daughters).........for how long I dont know. It must be embarrassing for the local JW community here in Perth to see articles about this fraud with the witnesses mentioned.
I will try to scan an article onto this soon tho i'm still a little illiterate when it comes to computers l
You can type firepower fraud wiki which should send you to the wikipedia site or type Tim Johnston jehovah, which seems to bring up some articles.
Cheers.

Johnston fights for $2m in art
SEAN COWAN and GARY ADSHEAD, The West AustralianNovember 28, 2009, 2:43 am
•Antiques and paintings worth up to $2 million are at the centre of a tug of war involving besieged Firepower chief Tim Johnston and entrepreneur Warren Anderson, whose family company made an estimated $20 million from the failed fuel technology company.
If successful, the items could become a target for anyone seeking Mr Johnston's assets, including a bankruptcy trustee or Firepower's shareholders.
The Johnstons' obsession with antiques is borne out in dozens of letters between Mr Johnston, his wife and Mr Cook in 2006 in which they discussed buying pieces worth up to $580,000.
Mr Johnston also commissioned works.
"Can you please send Vlad some money before Xmas towards the orientalist painting he is doing for you - the one of the beautiful slave girl with lion by a bed with the king and an attendant," Mr Cook wrote in December 2006.
"She is looking good. Such an orientalist temptress.
"Vlad loves painting her - passion in every stroke, of the brush that is."
Mr Cook spent hours researching items for the Andersons, the Johnstons and the Johnstons' daughters, and travelled to Europe with them twice on buying sprees.
On one occasion he was funded by Mr Johnston.
"What a great and rewarding experience," Mr Cook wrote after one trip.
"The bodyguards, the chauffeurs, the hotels, the meals etc."
In one letter about an Ashoka-cut diamond ring, Mrs Johnston gushed to Mr Cook about her recent trip to Italy with daughter Emily.
"Lago Maggiore was fantastic," Mrs Johnston said.
"Emily got a beautiful Valentino gown for her ball so she was chuffed."
Mr Cook told * _The West Australian _ *yesterday that Mr Anderson was one of Australia's biggest collectors and had given Mr Johnston sound advice on antiques.
"But it's very sad when good friends fall out and I have no understanding of any financial arrangements between Mr Johnston and Mr Anderson," Mr Cook said.
While spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on pieces from Russia, France and Italy, including a commode worth $37,000, the Johnstons were busy overseeing the construction and purchase of a luxury Bali villa at Nusa Dua.
This was done with the help of former WA police minister Gordon Hill.
But all of this was done while travelling extensively, in either first or business class, trying to secure contracts for Firepower's bulk fuel additive.
They were also networking with celebrities like Russell Crowe and former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh.
Also among the documents obtained by _The West Australian _was evidence of Mrs Johnston's commitment as a Jehovah's Witness during several family crises and conflicts with other church members.
"You will be humbled, Jehovah does not sleep, you might be fooling the elders because you . . . don't want to get disfellowshipped, you are treading and playing a very dangerous game," she wrote to a fellow Jehovah's Witness who was involved with Firepower.

EXCERPT:
Warren Perry Anderson is an Australian businessman and speculative investor whose net worth in 1990 was estimated by the BRW magazine at $190 million, though the following year he was reported to have debts of $500 million.[1] He has been a principal in major developments in Perth, Darwin and Melbourne. He has owned prestigious properties such as "Boomerang" a mansion in Sydney's eastern suburbs, and "Tipperary", a premier cattle and crop station in the Northern Territory. He has claimed to have been unfairly stripped of AUD$50 million in the course of the WA Inc bailout of Rothwells Bank, and was involved in the collapse of Firepower International.
In January 2010, Firepower's principal, Tim Johnston, said in court that he had been personally threatened with death by Mr Anderson, who was alleged to have previously employed enforcers from bikie groups, and Sydney personality Tom Domican.[13]

EXCERPT:
Warren Anderson. Photo: Tony McDonoughProperty developer Warren Anderson's 20-year legal bid to recuperate more than $90 million from the West Australian government after the infamous WA Inc era has failed completely.
The High Court of Australia yesterday rejected Mr Anderson's claim that a former chief-of-staff to former WA premier Peter Dowding gave him a verbal assurance the state would guarantee $50 million he provided in 1988 to prop up Laurie Connell's merchant bank Rothwells.
A High Court hearing was the businessman's last hope after the WA Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed his claim in 2006.
"In my 50 years of business, never have I seen anything like it in my life," he told ABC radio.
Mr Anderson's private company Tipperary Developments first launched the claim in 1992, in which Mr Anderson said Mr Dowding also gave him a verbal assurance that the money would be covered by the State Government if Rothwells could not repay the amount.
He said Mr Dowding had declined to enter into a written agreement.
Immediately after the $50 million was invested, it was withdrawn from Rothwells and transferred to the Government Employees Superannuation Board (GESB), which had invested in Rothwells.
The bank collapsed some months after.
Mr Anderson had agreed to the condition to hand over the $50 million in return for a tender agreement for a CBD site put up for sale by the WA government.
Kerry Packer's Consolidated Press Holdings was involved with Mr Anderson in a consortium which later bought the site, but Mr Packer declined to provide any of the $50 million attached to the deal.
Mr Anderson's lawyers argued at a 2006 trial, which ended in his defeat, that with accrued interest he was entitled to about $90 million.
He received $24 million.
The 1980s were labelled the WA Inc era after former premier Brian Burke's Labor government became embroiled in a number of failed corporate deals and financial disasters, including the collapse of Rothwells.
Hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars were lost during the scandal.

Elizabeth Krantz - 31 December 2005
How wealth and power corrupt. Since the death of Kerry Packer the Australian public has been treated to the unedifying spectacle of hordes of sycophantic journalists and politicians sucking up to the mighty Packer empire and eulogising one of Australia's most ruthless and brutal business operators.
To put it into some perspective, Kerry Packer was a ruthless robber baron who used his enormous wealth and power to intimidate and bully politicians, staff and rivals into submission, in order to further the wealth of his tribe.
The whimpering lapdogs are calling him a great Australian. Well, what has he done for Australia? Nothing much, but he has amassed an obscene fortune for himself and his family.
The Packer toadys are saying he revolutionised the game of cricket. Maybe he did, but only because he started a rival to the traditional game when the Australian Cricket Board refused his application to broadcast cricket games on his Channel Nine.
How can anyone say he has interests of Australian families at heart when his company has just bid $780 for the rights to broadcast AFL football. If it wins the bid, the result will be struggling families paying even more to watch their favourite game while further enriching himself together with a bunch of young sportsmen, many of whom are unprepared to deal with their sudden wealth.

In following decades, Burke continued to maintain his Labor party contacts and parliamentary influence, using them to further his career as a pro-business lobbyist. Meurant, upon leaving National, established a new party known as Right of Centre. Firepower International is launching its "Firepower Pill" in Sydney this week, sold in packets of 10. These promise to treat 60 liters (15.9 US Gallons) each: just open the fuel door and slap it in. There’s just one problem: additive pills don’t do much of anything, and certainly don’t live up to their promise of a greener, more fuel-efficient world.
Dan’s Data takes it down piece by piece, and is required reading for those who want the full story. Here’s 10 short, sharp shocks you can use to help friends wise up to useless products aimed at the credulous.

Family
In April 2010, he was found guilty of assaulting his estranged wife and one of her friends.[2] At issue was a computer said to contain documents relating to Firepower. After 42 years of marriage, the couple organised an auction sale of their 30-year collection of fine art and antiquities in 1400 lots, described as "almost certainly the largest sale of fine art and antiquities in Australia",[3] which realised AU$13.1million.[4][edit] Career and associations
Anderson has been associated with some of Australia's largest developments - the $1 billion-plus Westralia Square skyscraper in Perth, 50 Coles and K mart supermarkets around Australia, the new Parliament House complex in Darwin, and at least six major office blocks in the Melbourne CBD, including redevelopment of the Windsor Hotel site opposite Parliament House. He has conducted dealings and partnerships with billionaire businessman Kerry Packer, John Roberts of the construction giant Multiplex, which built most of his developments, and WA Inc entrepreneur Alan Bond. His political networking led to close associations with prominent ALP players Brian Burke, Paul Keating, Graham Richardson and many others.[1][edit] Investment controversies
[edit] Rothwells 'loan', 1988
Anderson had extensive property interests in Western Australia and the Northern Territory, including a mansion in Peppermint Grove, Perth and the vast Tipperary Station group (1 million hectares) on which he assembled a collection of 2000 exotic Asian and African animals before selling the property in 2003.[5] In association with media magnate Kerry Packer's Consolidated Press Holdings, he was negotiating a $270-million investment in a prime Perth CBD redevelopment prospect called Westralia Square, adjacent to the old Perth Technical School. He was persuaded to contribute $50 million to a bailout of Rothwells Bank by then-premier Peter Dowding. Anderson had agreed to the condition to hand over the $50 million in return for a tender agreement for the Westralia Square site which was being put up for sale by the WA government. Mr Packer declined to provide any of the $50 million attached to the deal. Anderson maintains that Dowding gave him a verbal assurance the state would guarantee return of his $50 million, but declined to put the agreement into writing.[6] Anderson has been unsuccessful in a legal action to recover the funds and pursued an appeal in the High Court.[7] In May 2010 the High Court rejected the appeal.[8][edit] Westralia Square
As stated above, Anderson and Kerry Packer invested $270 million and had grand plans to build on what they called Westralia Square, which is centrally located in the Perth CBD but has limited frontage to the prime roadway, St Georges Terrace, owing to a group of heritage buildings which were preserved from demolition by public protest with agreement of the Perth City Council. Plans for a $2 billion development by Indonesia's Samma Group fell through. Unable to recoup his Rothwells funds, Anderson left the project. After 15 years, Packer was obliged to sell his Westralia Square investment for a mere $19 million, taking a loss of more than $200 million.[9][edit] Firepower fuel pill shares
During its 2008 investigation of the Australian operations of the fraudulent Firepower organisation, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) filed a Federal Court action against companies associated with Anderson and other directors and financial advisers alleged to have profited from sale of shares without the purchasers receiving a prospectus or appropriate information about the risk involved. (Anderson was not himself named as a defendant.[10]:p.191) Anderson's company Owston Nominees was alleged to have been issued 40 million one-cent shares in Firepower's Virgin-Islands-based parent company Firepower BVI in June 2005, which were onsold for up to 50c a share.[11][12]In January 2010, Firepower's principal, Tim Johnston, said in court that he had been personally threatened with death by Mr Anderson, who was alleged to have previously employed enforcers from bikie groups, and Sydney personality Tom Domican.[13]

Anderson's $90m WA Inc era claim toppled
Aja Styles
May 29, 2010The High Court of Australia yesterday rejected Mr Anderson's claim that a former chief-of-staff to former WA premier Peter Dowding gave him a verbal assurance the state would guarantee $50 million he provided in 1988 to prop up Laurie Connell's merchant bank Rothwells.
A High Court hearing was the businessman's last hope after the WA Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed his claim in 2006.
Advertisement: Story continues below
Outside the High Court, Mr Anderson fumed about the level of injustice served by the state government's actions."In my 50 years of business, never have I seen anything like it in my life," he told ABC radio.

Burke worked both sides of politics in partnership with disgraced former ministerial colleague Julian Grill and assisted by former senator, Noel Crichton-Browne, to influence Liberal parliamentarians.[2]
